8th Grade Shadow Day at Oldenburg Academy
"Just wanted to give you a heads-up, we have evacuated the building because the lights flickered and we smelled smoke."
This was the message I got while I was listening to the keynote speaker at the Indiana School Safety Specialist training on Monday. How ironic! As you all know, the staff and students did a great job and once the emergency personnel gave the all clear, classes resumed as normal. Anytime I am away, I fret over something happening when I should just know that everyone here is trained and knows what to do.
Regarding the Safety Conference that I attend every year, I gained some new insights into school safety. This year, the focus was more on social and emotional learning, which is coming more to the forefront of education. How do we expect students to learn when they are emotionally unstable? The state of Indiana is finally realizing this and starting to develop resources to help school staff deal with this.
Tomorrow is our first official eLearning day. The best advice I can give you is to openly communicate with your child's teacher. Whatever happens unexpectedly, we can deal with it. Please remember to make sure your child, or you, logs in during school hours, 8 - 3, so they can be counted for attendance.
I hope everyone has a relaxing and safe Fall Break. I know I will definitely enjoy the predicted fall-like weather coming this weekend.

THE NEW BOX TOPS LABELS
Eventually the Box Tops program will become digital-only. Participating brands are starting to change their packaging from a traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Top label.
If you see this label, use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt.
Box Tops are still worth 10¢ each for your school.
The app will find participating products purchased at any store and instantly add cash to our school's earnings online.
Special thanks to State Representative Cindy Ziemke who came to visit all of our classes today to share information about her job and answer questions. She LOVED our new school!! Here she is with our 4th grade.
